Journalists have always played a crucial role in conflict reporting. The Geneva Convention (Additional Protocol I, Article 79) and clearly marked "PRESS" gear kits are supposed to protect their lives, as well as clearly denote their roles as non-combatants in dangerous areas. Targeting them is explicitly a war crime.
In Gaza and the occupied territories, these iconic blue vests have instead made them targets. The Kevlar plates in the lining have become as effective as the paper the news used to be printed on.
In spite of this, Palestinian journalists continue to risk life and limb daily to broadcast the truth on the ground directly to our phone screens. Their words and photos are a lucid op-ed to the propaganda circulated by the major news outlets. They have woken the world, and we owe a tremendous debt to them that can only be repaid by liberation. No one is free, until everyone is free! Free Palestine! 🍉
